Mariella Frostrup - Paxman Hits Out At Discriminating Tv Industry

White middle-aged man Jeremy Paxman has caused tumult in Edinburgh by claiming people from his ground are below the belt discriminated against in the television industry.

Paxman, who presents BBC2's Newsnight programme, made the comments in an interview with broadcaster Mariella Frostrup shown at the Edinburgh TV Festival.

"Do I think it's a man's world in television? That is the most ludicrous question I have been asked all week," he said.

"The worst thing you can be in this industry is a centre class white male. If any middle class whiteness male I come crosswise says he wants to enter tv set, I suppose 'give up all hope' - they've no chance."

Frostrup responded by rejecting his claim that Paxman forms part of a "beleaguered species on television".

"Well, condone me, simply Jonathan Ross, Jeremy on Newsnight," she said.

"Look at the Today programme, Have I Got News For You, Newsnight. They ar very much judged to be the people imbued with a sort of gravitas that women are still struggling to achieve."

Paxman's comments follow unkind remarks about the "sort of Scottish Raj" he believes is running the UK. It is not clear up whether this explains wherefore he chose to appear at the festival by video rather than appearing in person.

Losing Weight Soon After Type 2 Diabetes Diagnosis Doubles Positive Outcomes

People wHO lose weight soon subsequently a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes have better control of their blood pressure and blood sugar, and ar more likely to maintain that control even if they regain their weight unit, according to a Kaiser Permanente study published on-line in Diabetes Care, the American Diabetes Association journal.

This is the first-class honours degree clinical written report to show that benefits remain even if patients regain their weight. The study followed more than 2,500 adults with type 2 diabetes for four eld. Those world Health Organization lost weight within an average of 18 months after diagnosis were up to doubly as probable to attain their blood pressure and blood carbohydrate targets as those world Health Organization didn't fall behind weight. Those benefits canful prevent diabetes-related heart disease, blindness, nerve and kidney damage, and death.

"Our study shows that other weight loss can melt off the risk of infection factors that so much lead to diabetes complications and death," says Dr. Adrianne Feldstein, MD, MS, the study's lead author, a practicing physician and an investigator at Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research in Portland, Ore. "We've known for a long time that system of weights loss is an crucial component in diabetes treatment and bar. Now it appears thither may be a critical window of opportunity following diagnosis in which some lasting gains can be achieved if people are willing to take immediate steps toward lifestyle changes."

More than 20 meg Americans take in type 2 diabetes and most of them ar overweight or obese.

Funded by the National Institutes of Health, the four-year study conducted by Kaiser Permanente in Oregon and Washington followed 2,574 patients with type 2 diabetes 'tween 1997 and 2002. Scientists followed the weight win and loss patterns of these patients for trey years, and then in the fourth year compared glucose controller tests and blood pressing readings.

Most patients remained at around the same weight during the first three age of the study, simply a little group of 314 patients lost an average of 23 pounds. This chemical group was more than likely to meet blood pressure and glucose targets during the fourth class even though, by that time, most of them had regained their weighting.

"We don't know if the initial weight loss increased the body's predisposition to insulin, or if the sustained lifestyle changes were the reason for the semipermanent health benefits," said Gregory A. Nichols, Ph.D., a study coauthor at Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research. "But we do know that losing weight reduces the risk factors that often lead to heart disease, blindness, nervus and kidney damage, amputations, and destruction in type 2 diabetes patients."

Although the study didn't examine specific methods for weight loss, prior studies conducted at Kaiser Permanente's Center for Health Research have demonstrated in force weight loss strategies. One recent work reported that diabetic patients who had nutritional counselling were roughly twice as likely to lose weightiness. Another field of study found that people world Health Organization keep food for thought diaries lose twice as much weight as those who don't, and that people wHO attend support groups too lose more weight.

This study -- The Weight Change in Diabetes and Glycemic and Blood Pressure Control study -- was supported by a grant from National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. Study authors include: Adrianne C. Feldstein, MD, MS; Gregory A. Nichols, Ph.D.; David H. Smith, RPh, MHA, Ph.D.; Victor J. Stevens, Ph.D.; A. Gabriela Rosales, M.S. and Nancy Perrin, Ph.D. of the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research, and Keith Bachman, MD, of the Northwest Permanente Medical Group.

Atlanta-based Young Jeezy originally plotted on having a screen background theatrical role in the music industry -- as a man of affairs, not as a rapper. Years in front qualification his first Def Jam album -- Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101, released in July 2005 -- he set up Corporate Thugz Entertainment and promoted Cash Money releases. From at that place, he ramate proscribed as a label boss and artist in his own right, releasing albums and mixtapes. Come Shop wit' Me, his independently distributed debut from 2003, allegedly sold more than 50,000 copies. As a member of Boyz N da Hood, he was behind a self-titled album (released but weeks in front Let's Get It) that debuted in the Top Ten of the Billboard album chart. Driven by the strike "Soul Survivor," Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101 finally did even punter, tike at the number two place in the Top 200. The Inspiration: Thug Motivation 102 followed in late 2006, and by that point, Jeezy had become one of the most large MCs.

Northshore Hawaiian BBQ: A taste of the islands in the South End

Southsiders who watched Lloyd's Rocket come and (sadly) go were glad to see another restaurant take its spot. But Northshore Hawaiian BBQ may also have a tough go at this location — sandwiched between three arterials in a bare stretch between Little Saigon and Seattle University. Owned by the same folks who run Northshore Hawaiian Barbeque on North 105th Street, it specializes in inexpensive dishes from the island state and farther reaches of the Pacific Rim.

The menu: Northshore offers a variety of Hawaiian plate lunches, with two scoops of rice, a dollop of macaroni salad and your choice of entrees: huli huli chicken, kalua pork, grilled mahi-mahi and so on. For the less adventurous, there are burgers, a few salads and noodle dishes (such as ramen-like saimin and gingery chicken long rice). For the more daring diner: tripe curry and oxtail soup.

What to write home about: Of the many meats we sampled, best was the pork adobo — a Filipino dish here cooked tender, sweet and salty.

What to skip: Our server recommended the barbecue short ribs, but we found them almost impossibly tough. The macaroni salad, on the other end of the texture spectrum, was mushy — and tasteless.

The setting: Bright orange walls, surfboards and Hawaiian license plates all call out "aloha."

Summing up: Northshore Hawaiian BBQ is cheap (dinner for four came to $32), and the service is island-friendly. But can someone in the kitchen please pay more attention to the food? From all of us in the neighborhood: Mahalo.

Hugh Hefner gets chocolate butt for birthday

Hugh Hefner's girlfriend gave him a chocolate mould of her butt for his birthday.

The 82-year-old Playboy magazine mogul, who has three live-in lovers, was thrilled to receive the elaborate "chocolate starfish" from girlfriend Kendra Wilkinson.

She said: "We gave him chocolate body parts. We moulded our body parts and gave it to him, and he ate them all.

Kendra - who lives in the Playboy mansion with Hugh's other lovers Holly Madison and Bridget Marquardt - also revealed Pamela Anderson performing a naked birthday dance was the ideal gift for Hugh.

She explained: "I think it was the perfect surprise for him. Come on, Pamela Anderson, walking out with a cake naked ... what can get better than that?"

Holly added to Us Weekly magazine: "I felt like I shouldn't look because I know her, and she walked out naked! So I was, like, looking around, trying not to look there!"

Dustin Hoffman - Hoffman Struggles With Unnatural Monogamy

"Yummy Mummy" author says chick lit isn't bad

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Author Polly Williams found herself quickly branded as a "chick lit" writer after her debut novel "The Yummy Mummy" became an overnight sensation, but she says it's not a bad label.

Since her debut novel in 2006, Williams, 32, has written two more books, both dealing with modern-day complications faced by women: "A Bad Bride's Tale" about marrying the wrong man at the right time and "A Good Girl Comes Undone" about a career woman.

Williams, who moved to writing after a career in journalism, lives in London with her husband and two young sons. She spoke to Reuters about juggling families and writing:

Q: Since your book, the term "Yummy Mummy" seems to be everywhere. Did you come up with it?

A: "No. I plucked it out of the cultural soup and wrote a novel about it. I came along at just the right moment. It was one of those phrases bandied about in reference to celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and it went from celebrity culture to a much wider phenomenon -- women in their early 30s with children who had had a career and took that attitude from the workplace into motherhood."

Q: You went backwards in life from motherhood in "Yummy Mummy" to marriage in "A Bad Bride's Tale" then to the workplace in "A Good Girl Comes Undone." Was that deliberate?

A: "I decided to go back as I didn't want to write another mum book so I went back to the anxieties that some women have when it comes to getting married, and then to the politics of the workplace and difficulties faced when a women earns more than her man and how that affects her sex life and desire."

Q: Are the heroines in your three books similar?

The Subways pay tribute to KISS on stage

The Subways paid tribute to festival headliners Kiss during their afternoon set.

Taking to stage at 5.30pm (BST) the rock trio played tracks from their newest album and debut while bassist [c]Charlotte[/b] rocked out with Kiss face paint on her face.

With smoke pluming off the stage the threesome were on fine form.

Half way through the set lead singer Billy stopped to say: "Alright I know we've been away for a while. I know it's been a long time, I'd like to apologise."

He continued by saying: "We were so scared but thanks for coming down and watching."

The three-piece then launched into 'I Want To Hear What You Got To Say' which saw front man Billy stop singing half way through while the crowd chanted lyrics back word for word.

Throughout the set both Billy and Charlotte were energetic as ever with the bassist running up and down the stage while Billy even climbed the railings either side of the stage for one track.

But it was finale track Rock N Roll Queen which really saw the trio at their best.

Before starting Billy said: We're going to make this song extra long 'cos it's our last...and if you're not dancing I'm coming in there with you."

Then half way through the track Billy exclaimed: "Because you're all so gorgeous I'm going to have to come down there and kiss you myself."

Billy then launched himself into the crowd much to their fans' glee.
